ARCHITECTURE AND ENVIRONMENT

A chronological survey of the developments of Ancient architecture to Western architecture from the beginning of time to the period of Enlightenment, with consideration of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced the design of buildings. These issues are explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and philosophy of significant exponents.

Project 1

Passive architecture may be the simplest solution to the issues with thermal comfort and sunshine distribution in contemporary homes. Specifically, neither artificial lighting nor mechanical heating or cooling are required by the passive architecture. The local environment will typically be used by passively planned structures to preserve thermal comfort. In addition to being more cost-effective and comfortable, passive design solutions can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from mechanical ventilation, lighting, heating, and cooling systems in a building.

Project 2

Work productivity will increase and end users will experience more comfortable lighting in a given area of a facility. Yet, due to a lack of lamps or the ambient lighting in the room, some areas in buildings may not have enough illumination (space). The purpose of this assignment is to give the students a grasp of the fundamentals of designing artificial lighting by using a Lumen Method calculation.
